Use Case: Streamlining Roll-Off Communication at a Major Data Center
Client: Waste Solutions of Iowa (WSI)
Location: Des Moines Metro Area, Iowa
Challenge
Waste Solutions of Iowa provides liquid and solid waste management services throughout the Des Moines metropolitan area. When Meta’s data center in Altoona, Iowa awarded WSI a contract to manage stationary roll-off containers, the company identified a potential operational challenge before services even began.
Unlike traditional roll-off operations where containers are frequently moved, these containers remain in fixed locations and are serviced on an as-needed, “will-call” basis. Drivers needed a reliable way to communicate container status, request service, and document completed work.
WSI recognized that relying on text messages, phone calls, and manual office follow-up could create inefficiencies, including:
- Missing or incomplete information
- Additional verification between drivers and dispatch
- Manual data entry into operational systems
- Limited visibility for the customer
- Increased administrative workload
To avoid these issues and establish a scalable workflow from day one, WSI sought a more structured approach.
Solution
WSI implemented AirVote’s QR-code-based workflow across all stationary roll-off containers at the Meta data center.
A unique AirVote QR label was placed on each container, allowing drivers to record service needs and job completion directly from the field.
When a container requires service, the driver scans the QR code and submits key information including:
- Container identification
- Waste type
- Timestamp
- Service request details
This information is immediately sent to WSI’s operations manager, who can create an accurate will-call work order without additional clarification or data entry.
Once the container has been serviced and returned, the driver scans the QR code again to:
- Confirm completion
- Upload manifest photos
- Record tonnage information
- Create a permanent service record
WSI also utilized AirVote’s tagging feature to provide the Meta team with direct access to service status updates and complete service histories for each container. This gives on-site personnel real-time visibility without requiring WSI to prepare separate reports or updates.

Results
By implementing AirVote at the start of the contract, WSI successfully eliminated the communication bottlenecks it anticipated.
Key benefits included:
- Faster and more accurate service requests
- Reduced administrative workload
- Improved documentation and auditability
- Real-time visibility for both WSI and Meta
- Complete digital service histories for every container
- Greater operational transparency without additional reporting effort
The result is a streamlined workflow that improves efficiency for WSI while providing Meta with confidence that every service event is documented, traceable, and accessible when needed.
